Ford E-450 vs F-550 Shuttle Bus: Which Fits You?

If you need 14 seats or fewer and want any staff member to drive, the Ford E-450 is usually the better fit. If you need 20 to 30 seats, more wheelchair positions or a bigger body, the Ford F-550 is the step up, and most F-550 buses will need a CDL driver because of the seat count.
Both are workhorses, and we sell a lot of each. The right one depends on how many people you move, who will drive, and where the bus will run. Here is how they compare.
Two different chassis under the same kind of bus
The E-450 is a cutaway chassis from Ford's E-Series van line. The body builder takes the van's front end and cab and builds the passenger box behind it. The F-550 is a Super Duty truck chassis cab, the same family as Ford's heavy pickups, with a separate truck cab and a long frame behind it.
From the outside both look like a shuttle bus. Underneath, the F-550 is a heavier truck that can carry a longer, heavier body. That is the main reason it shows up under 24- to 33-passenger buses, while the E-450 tops out around the low 20s.
Weight ratings and what they mean for you
Ford lists the current E-450 cutaway at a 14,000-lb gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). The 2019 F-550 Glaval we have in stock lists 19,500 lbs. Both sit well under the 26,001-lb line that triggers a Class B CDL.
The extra rating on the F-550 is what lets it carry more seats, a bigger lift and more wheelchair positions with room to spare. Always check the GVWR sticker in the driver's door jamb of the exact bus you are buying.
Seat count and the CDL question
Under federal rules, a bus designed to carry 16 or more people, counting the driver, needs a CDL driver with a passenger endorsement, no matter what it weighs. That makes seat count the deciding factor for most buyers.
- E-450: commonly built as a 14 + driver non-CDL bus, or as a wheelchair layout like 12/4. It can also be built larger, which makes it a CDL bus.
- F-550: usually built with 24 to 30 seats, so it almost always needs a CDL driver.
If your drivers are volunteers or part-time staff, that difference matters more than anything else on the spec sheet. Our post on non-CDL shuttle bus capacity goes deeper on licensing, and you can browse our non-CDL shuttle buses for sale.
Wheelchair access and interior room
The F-550's longer body gives you more floor to work with. That is how a bus like our 2019 F-550 Glaval can be set up for up to 10 wheelchair positions with folding seats. An E-450 usually carries two to six positions, depending on how many seats you give up.
If you run dialysis routes or adult day programs with many wheelchair riders at once, the F-550 is worth a look. If most riders walk on and you need one or two lift positions, the E-450 does the job in a smaller footprint. See all our wheelchair buses for sale.
Driving, parking and running costs
The E-450 is shorter and easier to park at a church lot, hotel entrance or medical office. It is also the bus most shops know well, and parts are easy to find. We wrote about that in why the Ford E-450 is still the king of shuttle buses.
The F-550 is a bigger vehicle to drive and store, and it needs a CDL driver in most layouts, which adds to payroll. In return you move more people per trip, which can mean fewer buses and fewer drivers overall. Many of the F-550 and E-450 buses we sell run the same Ford 6.8L V10 gas engine, which keeps service simple.
Which one fits your operation
- Church or youth group with volunteer drivers: E-450, 14 + driver.
- NEMT with mixed riders: E-450 wheelchair layout, or an F-550 if you have CDL drivers and heavy wheelchair volume.
- Hotel or airport shuttle: E-450 with luggage space for smaller loads, F-550 for large groups and frequent loops.
- Senior living or municipal transit: often an F-550, since one bus can carry a full outing with several wheelchairs.

Frequently asked questions
Is an F-550 shuttle bus non-CDL? By weight, usually yes, since F-550 buses are rated well under 26,001 lbs. But most F-550 buses are built with 24 or more seats, and any bus designed for 16 or more people including the driver needs a CDL driver.
Can an E-450 carry wheelchairs? Yes. Many E-450 buses have a rear or side lift with two to six securement positions. Each position replaces some seats, so plan the layout around your riders.
Which is cheaper to buy used? It depends on year, miles and equipment. On our lot right now, the E-450 above is $24,000 and the F-550s are $65,990 and $76,990. Call us for current pricing on any bus.
