Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in Rhode Island

Rhode Island scores 9.1 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale, with the highest salt use per lane-mile in the country in the Clear Roads survey, plus Narragansett Bay salt air. Our buses come from outside the Salt Belt, and Manny drives every one and fixes what he finds before it is sold.

What Rhode Island Buyers Need to Know

  • Licenses: a regular license covers private use. Carrying passengers for pay needs a chauffeur license, and a bus for 16 or more people, including the driver, needs a CDL.
  • Medicaid NEMT vehicles: carriers need a DPUC NEMT certificate, and trips run through MTM. Vehicles added since July 31, 2024 must be no more than 4 model years old with under 150,000 miles at first inspection, leave service at 250,000 miles, be inspected yearly and serve NEMT only. Most of our current stock is older than that, so for Medicaid NEMT work, ask us to source a newer unit.
  • For-hire service: paid passenger vans and jitneys are licensed by the Division of Public Utilities. Ask DPUC which class a larger bus falls into.
  • Inspections: vehicles over 8,500 lb need a safety inspection every 12 months.
  • Sales tax: 7%, paid at the DMV. Qualified charitable and religious organizations with an exemption certificate, and government buyers, are exempt.
