Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in Ohio
Ohio scores 8.5 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale. ODOT used more than 760,000 tons of salt last winter and runs a large brine program, so Ohio buses build up heavy chloride on frames, brake lines and floors. Our buses come from outside the Salt Belt, and Manny drives every one and fixes what he finds before it is sold.
What Ohio Buyers Need to Know
- Licenses: a regular license covers a shuttle under 26,001 lb designed for 15 or fewer people, including the driver. Sixteen or more people, or 26,001 lb or more, needs a CDL with a passenger endorsement.
- Ambulettes: each Ohio ambulette needs a permit from the Ohio Medical Transportation Board (ORC 4766.07) and an annual inspection. Ohio Medicaid pays wheelchair-van trips through county JFS offices and managed care vendors.
- For-hire service: paid passenger carriers need a PUCO certificate, renewed yearly, with $1.5M liability for 15 or fewer people including the driver, or $5M for 16 or more. Buses for 16 or more people, or over 10,001 lb, need a yearly Highway Patrol inspection.
- Sales tax: 5.75% state plus county tax (about 6.5% to 8% total), paid at the title office. Churches and 501(c)(3)s using Form STEC B, and government buyers, are exempt.
- Emissions: E-Check covers only vehicles 10,000 lb or less, so most cutaways are exempt.
