Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in New Jersey
New Jersey scores 8.5 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale. The state salts heavily, uses liquid calcium chloride, and the Atlantic shore adds salt air, so New Jersey is harder on a bus than its mild winters suggest. Our buses come from outside the Salt Belt.
What New Jersey Buyers Need to Know
- Licenses: private, free use is fine on a regular license up to 16 passengers. A for-hire vehicle carrying more than 6 passengers counts as a bus, and its driver needs a CDL with a passenger endorsement plus fingerprinting.
- Wheelchair vans (MAV): licensed by the Department of Health under N.J.A.C. 8:40, with a lift or ramp rated 500 lb or more with manual backup, a 4-point forward-facing restraint plus patient belt, and DOH vehicle inspections. Medicaid trips run through Modivcare.
- Registration: for-hire buses get Omnibus plates and must pass an MVC Bus Unit inspection before registration and then twice a year.
- Sales tax: 6.625%. 501(c)(3) organizations and churches with Form ST-5, and government buyers, are exempt.
- Grants: FTA 5310 senior and disability bus grants run through NJ TRANSIT Local Programs.
