Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in New Hampshire

New Hampshire scores 8.8 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale, which we rate Severe. The state uses about 21.5 tons of salt per lane-mile, among the heaviest loads in the country, over a very long winter. Expect frame and brake-line rust on a local bus. Every bus we sell is sourced from outside the Salt Belt.

What New Hampshire Buyers Need to Know

  • Licenses: a Class D license covers vehicles up to 26,000 lb, but not a bus designed for more than 15 people. 16 or more people including the driver needs a Class C CDL with a passenger endorsement.
  • Wheelchair buses and Medicaid rides: Medicaid wheelchair-van trips (He-W 573) are arranged mainly by Granite Advantage plan vendors such as MTM. The state rule sets no vehicle, lift, age or inspection standard, so ask the vendor for its vehicle requirements before you buy.
  • Inspection: annual safety inspection is required. Emissions testing applies only to vehicles under 8,500 lb, so cutaway buses get the safety inspection only.
  • Taxes: no sales tax. You pay a town or city permit fee based on MSRP and age, plus the state registration fee.
  • Grants: FTA 5310 senior and disability bus grants run through the NHDOT Bureau of Rail and Transit.
