Used Shuttle Buses for Sale in Massachusetts
Best Buses For Sale is a family-run dealer in Huntington, New York, a day's drive from Massachusetts. We sell reconditioned non-CDL, wheelchair and church shuttle buses to Massachusetts churches, senior programs, nonprofits and Human Service Transportation (HST) providers, and we deliver anywhere in the state on our own flatbed trailers.
Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in Massachusetts
Massachusetts scores 10 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale, the top of the scale. MassDOT uses some of the highest salt rates per lane-mile in the country and pre-treats roads with brine, and the coast adds salt air. That is very hard on frames and brake lines. Every bus we sell is sourced from outside the Salt Belt.
What Massachusetts Buyers Need to Know
- Licenses: a regular license is fine for a shuttle under 26,001 lb GVWR designed for 15 or fewer people including the driver. 16 or more people, or 26,001 lb and up, needs a CDL with a passenger endorsement.
- Wheelchair buses (HST and MassHealth): rides run through the brokers MART and GATRA. Demand-response vehicles can be at most 15 years old, and lift-equipped program-based vehicles 9 years. Vehicles need a hydraulic lift with manual backup, 4-strap securement (Q'Straint, AMF-Bruns or Sure-Lok) plus a lap and shoulder belt, and RMV and broker inspections.
- For-hire service: paid bus service needs a DPU license or permit, and DPU inspects those buses on top of the annual RMV inspection.
- Inspection: annual inspection is required. Vehicles over 10,000 lb GVWR get a heavy-duty safety inspection, and diesels get an opacity test.
- Sales tax: 6.25%, paid at the RMV. 501(c)(3) organizations and churches with an exemption certificate, and government buyers, are exempt.
- Grants: FTA 5310 senior and disability bus grants run through MassDOT's Community Transit Grant Program.
