Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in Maryland

Maryland scores 7.1 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale, which we rate High. The state salts heavily for a mid-Atlantic state, uses magnesium chloride in the western counties, and the Chesapeake Bay adds salt air in the east. Every bus we sell is sourced from outside the Salt Belt.

What Maryland Buyers Need to Know

  • Licenses: a non-commercial Class C license covers single vehicles under 26,001 lb. A bus designed for 16 or more people including the driver needs a CDL with a passenger endorsement.
  • Wheelchair buses and Medicaid rides: Maryland Medicaid NEMT is run by local health departments (Montgomery County by its DOT), each with its own transport contracts and vehicle rules. COMAR 10.09.19 defines a wheelchair van as a van with a lift tailgate or side lift. For-hire wheelchair vans that cross DC, Maryland and Virginia metro lines fall under WMATC.
  • For-hire service: paid service needs Maryland PSC authority. For-hire vehicles are inspected twice a year, once by the PSC and once at a state station, and drivers of vehicles with 15 or fewer seats need a PSC driver license.
  • Inspection: a safety inspection is required at title transfer. Emissions testing (VEIP) runs every 2 years in 14 counties and Baltimore City.
  • Titling tax: 6.5% excise tax on the greater of the price or NADA clean retail value. There is no general nonprofit or church exemption; government buyers are exempt.
  • Grants: FTA 5310 senior and disability bus grants run through the Maryland Transit Administration's Office of Local Transit Support.
