Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in Delaware

Delaware scores 6.4 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale, which we rate Moderate. Salt use swings from winter to winter, but the whole state sits near ocean and bay salt air, which keeps working on a bus body all year. Every bus we sell is sourced from outside the Salt Belt.

What Delaware Buyers Need to Know

  • Licenses: a Class D license covers vehicles under 26,001 lb designed for 15 or fewer people including the driver. 16 or more people needs a CDL with a passenger endorsement.
  • Wheelchair buses and Medicaid rides: Delaware Medicaid (DMMA) rides run through Modivcare, which credentials and inspects provider vehicles. We found no separate Delaware state rule on lifts, vehicle age or inspection, so ask Modivcare for its vehicle standards before you buy.
  • For-hire service: paid limousine or bus service needs a DelDOT certificate and at least $1 million in liability plus $1 million in uninsured/underinsured coverage. Church transportation and free business shuttles are excluded.
  • Inspection: a DMV-lane inspection at registration and renewal. Vehicles over 14,000 lb get a safety check only.
  • Taxes: no sales tax. Delaware charges a 5.25% motor vehicle document (title) fee on the price or value.
  • Grants: FTA 5310 senior and disability bus grants run through the Delaware Transit Corporation (DART First State) and DelDOT.
