Why a Rust-Free Bus Matters in Connecticut
Connecticut scores 8.3 out of 10 on our road-salt rust scale. CTDOT salts heavily over a long winter, and the shoreline adds salt air from Long Island Sound. We buy our buses from outside the Salt Belt, so you start with a clean frame, brake lines and floor.
What Connecticut Buyers Need to Know
- Licenses: Connecticut is stricter than most states. A Public Passenger (F) endorsement is needed to drive a vehicle designed for 10 or more people, even in free private service such as church or senior vans, and for any paid livery use. Sixteen or more people including the driver also needs a CDL with a P endorsement.
- Wheelchair livery: wheelchair livery service needs a CTDOT Elderly & Handicapped Livery permit. HUSKY Health Medicaid rides run through MTM, which sets its own vehicle standards for providers.
- For-hire permits: paid service inside Connecticut needs a CTDOT livery or motor bus permit, even for a bus with out-of-state IRP plates.
- Sales tax: 6.35% (7.75% on vehicles over $50,000), paid at the DMV. Churches and 501(c)(3)s with a Connecticut exemption permit, and government buyers, are exempt.
- Inspection: most cutaway buses are over 10,000 lb GVWR and exempt from emissions testing. Livery buses are inspected by the DMV.
- Grants: FTA 5310 senior and disability bus grants run through the CTDOT Bureau of Public Transportation.
