Chapter One · Late 1800s

Built on Ice

It all began in the late 1800s, when Matteo Casamassima left Bari, Italy and arrived in New York City with little more than strength and vision. He founded Casamassima ICE, a business that became synonymous with ice in the city, delivering to bars, restaurants, hotels, bakeries, butcher shops, and markets.

Coal and wood were part of the operation, but ice was the identity. It was the backbone of food preservation, beverage service, and daily life before refrigeration.

Chapter Two

Advanced Through Innovation

From the very beginning, the Casamassima approach was different. While others invested in expensive equipment, we built smarter. Our first ice wagons were pulled by surplus horses, retired draft and police animals that were strong, experienced, and dependable.

We did not just deliver ice. We innovated. The family designed and installed ice cube hoppers directly into our trucks, so fresh cubes could be delivered en route. Matteo’s six sons joined the business, and the youngest, Manny, helped move the company from wagons to war surplus trucks customized for tough New York City routes.

Use what others overlook and turn it into something dependable.

Chapter Three · After the War

Westbury Transport

As refrigeration spread and the suburbs boomed, Manny saw change coming. He left the family business and founded Westbury Transport, delivering furniture to the homes of returning GIs and their families.

He started with a surplus truck chassis and personally designed custom furniture delivery bodies based on years of hands on work. Many of his innovations were adopted by others in the industry, influencing standards well beyond his own fleet.

  • Durability
  • Space efficiency
  • Ease of loading
  • Adopted industry wide

Chapter Four · Third Generation

Led Through Logistics

Manny’s son Matthew joined the family business after gaining valuable experience at UPS in routing, logistics, and operational systems. He applied those lessons to scale Westbury Transport into a multi state logistics operation with more than 100 trucks, offering warehousing, last mile delivery, and custom freight solutions.

The company delivered to some of the most complex locations in the region:

  • The Original World Trade Center
  • Roosevelt Field Mall
  • Macy’s Herald Square

To serve them, the family built custom trailers that could clear New York City tunnels, redesigned interiors to keep freight secure, and modified equipment to cut turnaround times.

Optimized Through Operations

Manny Casamassima Jr. joined the business with a lifelong passion for all things on wheels and a strong background in finance and operations. Working alongside his father, he helped secure major department store accounts and sharpen the company’s edge in a competitive market.
